How To Educate and Promote Environmental Awareness in 2021

June 23, 2021

The Earth is one of the most beautiful creations known to man. With all the mountains, valleys, cities, and animals, it’s essential to keep conditions livable without harming the Earth.

Unfortunately, throughout the course of history, societal practices have done lasting damage to the Earth’s atmosphere. But in more recent years, people are becoming more aware of how their actions affect the environment.

An influential factor in promoting environmental awareness is social media. With apps like Twitter, Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok, it’s easy for environmentalists to relay information about specific issues regarding the Earth.

In this article, we’ll define what environmental awareness is and some practices that you use to reduce your carbon footprint. We’ll also discuss how you can use social media to promote and educate others about environmental issues.

What is Environmental Awareness?

Before we begin talking about environmental awareness, we first need to define the environmentalism movement. It’s an ideology that focuses on reducing human activities that are the Earth and its wildlife.

As time has progressed, the movement’s focus has evolved to reduce the environmental effects of global climate change by creating sustainable societies. With each person doing their part by lowering nonrenewable energy source usage, we can continue to keep the Earth safe for all inhabitants.

How Can You Promote Environmental Awareness?

If you want to use your social media platform to promote environmental awareness, you’ll first need to educate yourself on environmental issues. Make sure that you stay updated on current news and events regarding particular topics.

Also, take time to read books and articles to make sure you’re fully informed. Since you know the issues, it makes it easier to discuss environmental projects with others.

Being an environmentalist can be challenging because there are so many issues that you want to solve at once. However, it’s important to choose a problem that you feel needs the most attention.

It’ll enable you to do more good in a specific area without spreading yourself too thin. Once you’re comfortable enough, you could look at another issue linked to one that you’re focused on. That way, you can focus on what’s important to you and help in multiple ways.

What Environmental Issues Are We Facing Today?

There are multiple issues today that are causing significant damage to the environment. People may know of some, but they may not be aware of all.

That’s why you can use your social media platform to promote these issues and inform others. Let’s look at some significant environmental problems that we’re facing in the future.

Food Waste

According to the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in the UN, about one-third of all the food produced globally gets wasted. That equals over 1.3 billion tonnes of food, which is a massive cause for concern, especially when world hunger is rising.

When food gets wasted, the materials and labor that went into prepping it does too. It also plays a part in:

  • Water shortages
  • Increased greenhouse emissions
  • Biodiversity loss

The UN’s goal is to reduce the amount of food waste worldwide by 2030. They have outlined plans for sustainable development goals in their new agenda.

Deforestation

Another problem causing significant environmental damage is deforestation. It’s the practice of cutting down or removing trees from an area through purposeful or natural actions. Deforestation can happen for a multitude of reasons, such as:

  • Cattle ranching
  • Farming
  • Mining
  • Infrastructure projects
  • Natural events, like hurricanes, floods, and fires

According to National Geographic, most deforestation happens in the Amazon, which has lost over 17% of its trees. As a result, humans and animals alike are kicked out of their habitats and forced to survive in conditions they aren’t used to.

Deforestation also contributes to other problems like increased greenhouse emissions and loss of water in the atmosphere. Researchers believe that the Amazon rainforest and those like it could cease to exist in the next fifty years.

Plastic Pollution

Have you ever seen a video that shows an animal struggling with a plastic bottle or wrapper? It can be a frustrating sight because these animals are constantly dealing with plastic.

Plastic pollution has been an ongoing battle throughout the years. According to Our World in Data, the world produces over 380 million tonnes of plastic per year, leading to high plastic pollution rates. Researchers believe that this will triple by 2040 if something isn’t done.

It takes roughly 400 years for one plastic article to decompose. So to ensure that our kids and their kids have a sustainable society, we need to start curbing our plastic use now.

How You Can Help

As you can see, the Earth has multiple issues that require a lot of attention. But again, most people may not know what’s going on. So now it’s your turn to step in and inform others. Here are some different ways you can promote environmental awareness.

Change Everyday Behaviors

When people think of sustainable societies, it’s always in the grand scheme of things. But to get there, we’ll need to build the correct behaviors first, which start with our everyday lives.

By adopting new practices like walking or cycling to places instead of driving or using reusable grocery bags instead of plastic, we can significantly reduce our greenhouse emissions and plastic waste.

Consider talking to those in your community to raise awareness of the issue. With some help, your small practices may trickle down to others.

Create a Social Media Channel

Social media is one of the most powerful tools that we have at our disposal today. It’s used for many things like marketing, networking, and informing. It’s been a great tool in raising environmental awareness.

Think about a cause you’re passionate about and create a social media channel for it. Consider using platforms like Twitter, Instagram, and TikTok for your content creation.

By generating a small online following, you’ll be able to educate others on environmental issues. You can also show them snippets of projects your working on or practices you use.

If you need inspiration, you can always look at other social media channels and see how each activist promotes environmental awareness.

Support Local Businesses

Chain supermarkets offer convenience, but sometimes the production of their products includes harmful environmental practices. So why don’t you buy from your local farmers or businesses instead?

Their products are organic and pesticide-free, meaning there are no harmful chemicals to you or the environment. You could also share these goods on your social media channel to bring more awareness to sustainable food options in your area.

Start a Community Project

The first step to creating a sustainable society starts in your community. But how can you get people involved in its creation?

You can start a local project. It doesn’t need to be something significant; you could create a glass disposal bank if your community doesn’t have one or a local garden where you plant flowers and trees.

So what if you don’t have huge government funding or a large social media presence? Each small step that you take to help the earth will have an impact in the future. Starting is what counts.

Use Renewable Energy Sources

Non-renewable energy sources like oil, coal, gas, and electricity have been leading causes of greenhouse emissions each year. They’ve been staples since the onset of society, so it’s hard for people to switch to other energy sources.

A significant change you can make is switching to a renewable energy source to power your home or business. These energy sources include:

  • Solar power
  • Hydroelectricity
  • Wind power

By using one of these renewable energy sources, you can reduce your greenhouse emissions. If you’re involved in your local community, see if a place like a community center or a state building can switch to using one of these resources instead.

Environmental Awareness Will Always be Important

To live the longest and healthiest lives possible, we need a place to do so. That’s why it’s important to promote environmental awareness. People need to be aware of how their actions are impacting life on Earth.

Social media has helped people become more informed on issues. But we need to do more to create lasting change. If you follow the suggestions above, you can promote environmental awareness in many different ways.

Try collaborating with others on social media to see what ecological projects you can work on.

Also, continue to share information from others or blog about environmental issues.

You never know; you could help spawn a new leader of environmentalists that will lead us towards the future.
